During the era of the reformation, the Lord used literature in a mighty way to spread the gospel. In fact, Martin Luther stated, “The printing press is the latest gift from God to spread the gospel.” Before the invention of the printing press, Bible’s were chained in churches and withheld from the masses. Copies of the Scriptures were scarce and expensive, as scribes had to transcribe the sacred words by hand. However, Johannes Gutenberg revolutionized the world with his invention of the printing press, and in the 1450′s the Gutenberg Bible was printed and made accessible to the general public (“Johannes Gutenberg”). The knowledge of God was brought within the reach of the multitudes and thousands came to a knowledge of Christ as their personal Savior.
God wants to use the power of the press today just as he did during the time of reformation. Whereas the Scriptures were almost completely inaccessible in the Dark Ages, they are now easily obtained and relatively inexpensive with an average of four Bibles per American household (Radosh). However, even with such widespread access to this sacred book, ignorance abounds in regards to who God really is and the plans He has for us. Today’s need is for literature that will point people back to the grand truths presented in the word of God and for people who are willing to share these truths with others.
Mission Statement
The purpose of GLOW is to provide every willing-hearted church member with the training and materials necessary to become a literature evangelist. Its overall vision sees the eventual activation of “hundreds and thousands…visiting families and opening before them the word of God.”9T 126 Many are to be “prepared to walk from house to house, carrying the truth to the people… Entering the homes…to sell or give away literature, and in humility to teach them the truth.” RH May 24, 1906
GLOW, working closely with individual churches, has a worldwide scope. In reference to Revelation 18:1 Mrs. White said, “in a large degree through our publishing houses is to be accomplished the work of that other angel who comes down from heaven with great power and who lightens the earth with his glory.” 7T 140. Through GLOW, millions can receive the light from the Word of God and prepare for the events that are even now transpiring on the earth.
